Blog guest: Radovan Silijevski

He only started swimming when he was 14. Even though at the time it looked as if he wouldn’t have a successful swimming career, Radovan Silijevski managed to prove it wrong. In 2007 he qualified for the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, then he was a finalist at the European championship, Mediterranean Games, and University Olympic Games. He also qualified for the 2012 Olympic Games in London where he competed in both individual races and 4x100 relay. Today he is the coach of the first team, and as a Swimming Dad #Blog guest he talks about his first competition and whether it was a sweet or sour experience, and how he managed to deal with both victories and defeats. Do you remember your first c

Blog gost: Radovan Siljevski

How to develop healthy competitive spirit with your kids, and how to teach them to enjoy swimming?

Are you one of those parents saying: it's not the winning but the taking part that counts? Do your kids train because of the medals or healthy habits, gaining new experience, knowledge, skills, friends? What do you say to them when they go to the training: be good or have fun and enjoy? Do you remember your kid’s first competition, or you missed it? Are you cheering passionately when your kids are competing, or you think that’s a waste of time? Do you remember your first competition if you missed your kid’s? Were you nervous or were you a tough nut to crack?  What was that experience like: sweet or sour? What was the advice you got and what was the one you gave to your child before the first

Rainy adventure

When autumn comes with its cold rain, somehow most of us decide to stay at home, in a warm place, watch films or read books… Honestly, autumn and rain have never been close to my heart. However, since I became a dad, I have started looking at them a bit differently. We have even managed to become friends, even though that autumn grey weather and constant sound that the raindrops make on the window, can become annoying and to last far too long. Today, I am really looking forward to the rainy weather, because I will be jumping into puddles with my little shark and fish. We just put on our rain coats, wellies, “supersonic waterproof” suits and off we go. The umbrellas are optional. The moment w

Kišna avantura

Čim dođe jesen, počne hladna kiša, nekako se većina nas uvuče u svoje domove, ušuška, gleda filmove, čita knjige... Iskreno, jesen ni kiša nisu mi bili bliski. Jednostavno, obučemo kabanice, gumene čizme, ”supersonično nepromočivo” odelo i pravac napolje. Kišobran može, ali i ne mora. Čim izađemo, svaka barica je naša, i velika i mala.

Bringing kids to work - 5 reasons why!

When the kids are born, somehow our jobs become "escapes" from the new "responsibilities" that we are yet to understand and accept. Parents constantly balance between work and family. Both moms and dads do the same. Whoever tried it knows it's not easy, but it's completely realistic and doable! Do we need to balance and how much, or to simply blend these two halves into one? Do we sometimes need to bring kids to work? Why should we take them at all? How much understanding do employers or other colleagues have? How many of you are able to take your kids to work tomorrow? Why shouldn’t you include children in your life since they are very young? The easiest thing is not to take them anywhere,

Ka

Blog guest: Sara Isakovic

Sara Isakovic won a silver medal at the Olympic Games in Beijing in 2008, when she was only 20. She is the only woman, next to Federica Pellegrini, who managed to swim 200m freestyle under the magic limit of 1min 55second, and they both set a new world record. Today, after a very successful swimming career, Sara helps young athletes to understand their priorities both in swimming and their lives. As a Swimming Dad #Blog guest, she talks about her education, and whether it helped her to achieve top results, how she managed to balance between the school and trainings, and whether the world record is more important than education. How can education help a top-class athlete? In my opinion, educa

Education and sports must go hand in hand

How much is the top sport result more important than education? Does the world class sport inhibit education and vice versa? How difficult is it to combine sport and school? What can one do with all those medals when you turn 25? After swimming I also started playing basketball. Soon I reached the first team and played in the Yugoslav First Federal Basketball League. Then, being an excellent student, in the first grade of high school I was asked to choose between education and professional sport. Unlike today, at that time there were no specialised (primary or secondary) schools nor faculties for athletes, that were organised based on the dynamics of different trainings, competitions, and th

Zato, nisam mogao da us
